A person’s smile is one of their best features. Keeping your mouth clean not only improves the appearance of your smile but improves your breath. Bad breath, sometimes referred to as halitosis, is an issue that many individuals experience. However, in most cases, it can be prevented with the right tools and actions. There are exceptions where bad breath is caused by disease or other issues but most of the time by using the right cleaning techniques, it can be avoided. Continue reading to learn more about how you can prevent bad breath.

Causes Of Bad Breath

There are many things that cause bad breath. Some of the causes can include:

bad breath
  • Food
  • Medications
  • Smoking and use of tobacco
  • Poor dental hygiene
  • Dry mouth
  • Infections
  • Other conditions

Preventing Bad Breath

With the right preventative actions, most of these issues can be dealt with before they become a problem. Bad breath caused by infections and medications is difficult to avoid. If you are experiencing bad breath due to one of these issues, reach out to your dentist and they can help improve your infection or figure out a better system for your medication.

Brush Your Teeth

The most full-proof way to keep your teeth looking great and your breath smelling good is to take good care of your oral health. It is recommended that you brush your teeth every morning and every night, or after each meal.

Floss Every Day

Having food stuck in your mouth or sugar coating your teeth can create plaque and make your breath smell bad. Make sure to floss once a day and use mouthwash every evening in order to avoid these issues.

Adjust Your Diet

Some foods are stinkier than others. Other foods create a more noticeable stench in your mouth when they mix with your mouth’s natural saliva. Dairy, onions, garlic, and tuna fish are examples of foods that can make your breath smell worse. If you don’t want to avoid these foods, make sure to rinse your mouth with water after eating or brush your teeth after each meal.

Update Your Dental Tools

Sometimes an old toothbrush or a dirty retainer can be to blame for bad breath. You should be changing out your manual toothbrush every three to four months. Make sure to clean out your retainer every week or so in order to improve your breath and the appearance of your teeth.
